Post Code Geographical Search

Over the weekend I accessed http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/ for post code location with Code-Point Open source data for Latitude and Longitude. Post office did offer a purchase but you would be looking at well over £1000 each year with additional updates costing a few hundred each.

Information Community Web site.

Purpose and Significance:

The information web site is to be a community based portal for finding a local retailer from the post code of the person wishing to buy local rather than from the larger stores. These would include International retailers from Indian, Polish, Chinese, African and the Muslim community stores as well as the traditional English retailer offering more than a paper and milk. With the expansion of supermarkets which is crippling the local retailers, this is away to provide a more cost effective way to buying products and helping your local store, and by directing more custom to the relevant stores. Due to the recent recession, this is a great opportunity for local residents to support their local shop and community.

Target Audience:

Target Audience for the web site will be all savvy computer users of all ages that wish to support the local store and to save the pennies. (Students – Foreign and want to be cooks).

Expected outcomes:

• A closer relationship between customer and local shops.
• Customer benefits: e.g. save on petrol - carbon footprint, community support, cheaper deals, money saved, a stance against the big stores.
• Shop owner benefits: e.g. free Advertising, more custom, good community provider, profit.
• Retailers – competition.
